Where is Duisburg ?

Duisburg (Germany)

Some facts about Duisburg ...

Duisburg is frequently associated with heavy industries and the largest inland harbour in the world. But few people know that Duisburg, situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Ruhr, is one of the oldest university towns in Germany. Duisburg was granted permission by the Pope to found a university in 1564. But it was not until ninety years later, in 1655, that the official opening took place amid great pomp and ceremony. The University had the traditional four faculties of Theology, Philosophy, Jurisprudence and Medicine, and during the 163 years of its existence, it educated about 6000 students. In 1818 the University in Duisburg was dissolved in favour of the newly founded university of Bonn.

In 1972, Duisburg became a university town again. On the 7th August, the University of Duisburg was opened as a Gesamthochschule with full academic rights including those of conferring doctoral degress and habilitations. The University grew out of the merger between the Duisburg teacher training college and the college of technology. Starting with 2700 students, the University rapidly grew larger. In 1980, the name Universität-Gesamthochschule-Duisburg was conferred by state law on the new institution. In 1994 the University was named after the famous Gerhard-Mercator, inventor of the Mercator-Projection. The offical name of our University is now Gerhard-Mercator-Universität-Gesamthochschule- Duisburg.
